The Lebanese Cedar Tree in the words of Ambassador Hale
5000 steps Walked 5000 Lebanese Cedar Trees Planted
We've Walked With Mike ..
November 3 2012
On the 3rd of November 2012, and with the support of USAID Lebanese Reforestation Initiative, the Municipality of Bsharre, Friends of The Forest, and Le Royal, Michael took 5000 steps into the Cedars Forest under the motto “Let Your Disability Be Your Strength,” and with every step, a new cedar tree was planted. Five thousand cedar trees were rooted into Bsharre’s beloved soil, and into the hearts and minds of many people. With every step and every tree, Mike brought back life into the symbol of Lebanon’s unity and resilience, into the hopes and dreams of the people, and into the world of 250,000 ‘disabled’ Lebanese (7% of the population). With every step and cedar tree, Mike showed his community that ‘disability’ could be turned into ability, and the ‘disabled’ can and most take part in rebuilding his/her country and nation. Mike did not only walk for disability, he walked out of his love for Lebanon, taking on a challenge that was bigger than himself and wider than his scope. His walk aimed to inspire both the ‘ordinary’ and ‘disabled’ to devotedly work in carrying the country forward, and fearlessly break all barriers that life places in their path.

The National Cleanup Campaign of the Lebanese Shore and Underwater - Operation Big Blue - May12, 2013
on May 12th, 2013, and after his walk for Bsharre’s mountain cedars, Michael decided to walk, at the heart of Beirut, for the Lebanese coast. Followed by a large group of people of all ages and backgrounds, and a significant number of public and notable figures, Mike walked from the iconographic ‘Raouche Rock’ to the seashore of ‘Ramle l Bayda.’ His goal was to raise awareness on the need to protect the marine ecosystem and the beach. The event was held with the help of Operation Big Blue, and collaboration of the Swiss Embassy for the inauguration of the national shore-cleaning day. And on that day, more than 4000 people joined hands to clean the shore extending from Sour to Tripoli. In his groundbreaking, and deeply moving, inspirational talk at the event, Michael called out to the youth of his beloved country in a speech that would remain alive in each and every one’s heart, ending it: “I promise you before the end of the day, you will forget that I have no legs. And if I, Michael Haddad, without legs am walking for the Lebanese beach… imagine what you, standing on your feet, could do.”
